Diabolik Stories - The Blade of Vengeance
Playing with a comic book adventure
Diabolik Stories – The Blade of Vengeance is a collaborative crime-themed game where you can play as the famous comic book character and his partner Eva Kant. Players must work together to pull off a heist, interactively reliving the story of the comic book of the same name whose extraordinary success gave rise to a sequel. How? Using the well-known gadgets of the King of Terror such as masks, daggers and his unmistakable Jaguar, interacting with the characters in the story and being careful to avoid the police led by Commissioner Ginko. Pendragon Game Studio, the publisher of the game, in collaboration with Astorina, the publisher of the comic book, and DAM Things!, the developers, aims to renew the genre of interactive stories by introducing several innovations.
THE STORY
The plot unfolds in over 29 Heist Cards and 15 Investigation Cards that are put into play depending on the players’ choices. Each card in play represents an element of the story (a place, a character, an obstacle, etc.) to interact with in order to put new cards into play in an attempt to get to the end of the adventure. The crime plot will captivate all lovers of detective stories as well as comic book fans: in an attempt to steal the Myanmar ruby necklace, Diabolik will cross paths with Pan Mei, a skilled knife thrower seeking revenge.
THE CHALLENGE
The players must above all understand how to move around the cities of the state of Clerville to reach their objectives without being discovered by the police and Commissioner Ginko: every time they are discovered the Danger level increases until they have to give up the job!
REPLAYABILITY
Each game is different from the previous one thanks to a random setup and the police reaction that acts adaptively to the players’ moves. Furthermore, the solution can be reached in different ways, thus making the story playable multiple times.
EASY TO LEARN
A set of rules called Quadruple Hesit has also been created, a real “game within a game” that allows you to set up and learn to play in just a few minutes.
ELEGANT DESIGN
Particular care has been taken in the quality of the materials and aesthetics, offering a look that can fit into the atmosphere of the comic (all the cards have a different image taken from the comic books).
EXPANSION
It is also compatible with the board game Diabolik: Heists and Investigations thanks to which it is possible to relive The Blade of Revenge in a competitive team game.
FREE COMIC BOOK
Inside the rules there is a QR Code that allows you to download the first pages of the comic The Blade of Revenge in PDF format.
“The success of the board game, which sold out in a few months and which also saw a recent release in the US, together with the idea of making a comic book story interactive, convinced us to invest in a new project on Diabolik with a unique formula”, said Silvio Negri-Clementi, CEO of Pendragon Game Studio. “Fans of the character and of the crime genre in general will be able to play Diabolik Stories – The blade of vengeance as a stand-alone game or try it as an expansion of the board game”.
Mario Gomboli, Editorial Director of Astorina srl, commented on the new initiative as follows: “If Diabolik had stopped after the first heist, the saga would have ended nine hundred episodes ago. It was therefore predictable that the adventure would have a sequel, that the game would have a development, that the challenge would continue. In a way, however – this is true – unpredictable”.
The game is developed by DAM Things!, whose partner and founder, Luca Maragno, said: «It is an interactive story, but it is not a simple gameplay with a branching narrative. The challenge for players will be to try to understand not only how to continue the plot but above all how to move Diabolik and Eva around the places of Clerville without being discovered by Ginko».
